Roomlala | Firdaous H.
Firdaous02/08/2017
I lived in this place from the 22/02/2019 to the 08/06/2019 almost four months. - The booking service with roomlala, although expensive, is safe - The house is well situated in the 14th district, at few minutes walk from Denfert Rochereau Metro station and the famous rue de la gaité and at walking distance from Montparnasse tour but : - A mouse live in this room: I saw the mouse a few times running around my room and I had to leave the room early than I had planned. The host knew about it, and find it quite normal as there is a restaurant downstairs. However, she never warned me about it and when confronted she said that she called the rat-disinfestation company but I saw the mouse jumping over the anti-rat black boxes the company has put earlier in the room. - Living here is about following the hosts' strict rules: Your host will not miss the opportunity to dictate you rules about how to use every knife, plate and cleaning sponge; scrutinize your movements in the kitchen and condescendingly correct you if rules are missed. - No visits are allowed: You will not have the right for an afternoon visit from your family members so forget about a friend's visit or a night over. - Immense lack of privacy: You won't have a key to your room, so expect it to be inspected while at work. I heard my roommate's room entered a few times by the host when the roommate was away. This room you are renting will have a storage room inside, so she will ask for your consent but later gets in and out with and without it for the storage but also to inspect, once she described exactly what I have in my room! Note that this storage room is where the mouses hide. - The room has no isolation acoustic or thermic: the building is old, the room doesn't have double glazing and the building is on a big avenue and juxtaposed to the main police station of the district, so expect to live in a quite noisy environment. And to top it all, the metro passes right beneath the building and adds up a bit of fun with a small "earthquake" every 5 minutes from 6am to 2am non-stop. - The hot water system is quite peculiar: hot water is limited to a certain amount of liter per day, and the one you will use in your shower is also linked to the kitchen, so the days where the host use a lot of hot water in the kitchen, and your roommate has taken a shower, by the end of the day you may not have enough to shower with. I had to stop running in the evenings after work due to this, as I unexpectedly had cold showers a few times. - You can not do the laundry yourself: you would need to wait for your host to do it for you for once a week no more if you don't like this rule she will invite you to do it in the laundry services which is quite costly in such neighborhood. And if she is on vacation that she may go on without previous notice, you will have to wait. - You won't have access to the living room: or any other space in the house, except your room and the kitchen/ bathroom. - The heating system exists but your host will never put it on, even when you ask her to: I had the chance to rent in the spring season, still, some nights the temperature went below 1 degree Celsius and no heater was on, if you ask your host, she will insist that it is automatic and give you a sweater to wear! - The bed and pillows are old, very uncomfortable and full of mites: I switched the bedsides and put it upside down a few times, still uncomfortable (I weight 48kg) and still. For the mites, I spent sleepless nights coughing and had to start taking a daily antihistaminic prescription to be able to sleep. - The room doesn't have a mirror to get ready: and if you move the one in the bathroom to use it and put it back on your host will scream at you and treat you very bad and threaten to put you at the door which she did to me. Very strange situation and not the nicest of the hosts, knowing that she had a cheque of 650€ and could withdraw money from it if I break something. - The host seems to be uncomfortable with the tenant cooking and using the kitchen utensils: in the kitchen, you will have a two small drawer-like storage plus a shelf or, an almost shelf in the fridge for all your groceries, and while cooking I always felt inspected and uncomfortable whenever I cook during the hosts presence. - The fridge is old and doesn't function well: I always find mold in all the cheese I buy after a couple of days. - You won't have a rental contract: This is a sublet, the host won't provide you a contract, won't accept to be paid by bank transfer, only cash, and when you ask for a receipt, she will scribble on a paper without putting her name or any reference to herself. This may be challenging for foreigners as my self that doesn't have a french bank account. All in all, this place with what it offers for the price of 650 euros is not worth it. I have lived in five countries and shared places with people from different cultures and backgrounds, this was by far the least I enjoyed if I enjoyed it at all. The issue here is that the host makes no effort into discussing issues and trying to solve them with you, the main rule is "if you don't like it go elsewhere" and she made it clear once. The renting market in Paris is difficult and full of scams and everyone knows it, this will force you to consider even places like this, just be sure to make an informed choice. The main reason I booked this room is that it was at walking distance from my work and as I booked from abroad, Roomlala platform provided a secure way of payment. Good Luck!
